POST-OPERATIVE
INSTRUCTIONS

Here are general post-operative instructions that apply to all surgeries performed at Paro Gatineau. Note that we will give you instructions specific to your intervention the day of your treatment.

Do not drink hot liquids or alcohol during the first 48 hours after your surgery.

Do not chew at the surgical site for 14 days after your procedure. Avoid eating hard, hot or spicy foods and avoid food containing seeds (e.g.: chia, flax, bread / multigrain bagel, etc.)

Have soft, cold or lukewarm diet (smoothies, yogurt, pasta, etc.).

Do not drink through a straw (sucking movement) during the healing period.

After 48 hours, you can return to the warmer food, but avoid hard / seed-containing food (examples: popcorn, sesame seeds, nuts, etc.).

Drink lots of water and cold liquids.

Take your prescribed medication as recommended

Regarding pain, unless you are told otherwise, you can alternate between the prescribed Ibuprofen (Advil) (400mg or 600mg) and Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 500mg every 4 hours.

If you were prescribed antibiotics , take all of the tablets as directed.

Brush and floss your teeth normally, EXCEPT at the surgery site.

Rinse gently with the prescribed mouthwash (2x / day x 60 sec.) for 2 weeks

Brush your teeth, except at the surgical site, 30 minutes after using the mouthwash.

Ne pas rinse vigorously or spit.

It’s important not to exercise, lift heavy weights, or tilt your head forward for the first 48 hours.

After this time, you can calmly resume your physical activities, except for contact sports and swimming where it's best to wait until the healing period is over.

Marked swelling and/or bruising may develop as a result of surgical procedures.

To reduce postoperative swelling, apply ice outside and away from the surgical site, alternating every 10-15 minutes for the first 3-4 hours.

Swelling may appear up to 3 days after surgery and will be reduced by applying ice.

After 48 hours, if the swelling persists, replace the ice with moist heat (e.g. warm or hot magic bag).

It's important to take the pain killer medication for the first 2 days - They also reduce swelling - After 48 hours, take them only if you have pain.

Resting and sleeping with your head elevated will help minimize swelling.

Slight bleeding from the surgical site is normal during the first 48 hours.

In case of a gum graft, if bleeding is coming from the roof of the mouth, apply a firm pressure for 10 minutes with a cotton gauze.

NEVER apply pressure to the grafted site

If the bleeding is excessive and does not stopnotify us immediately by calling the emergency number given to you at the time of surgery.

Tobacco smoking impairs the healing process following a surgery. This is why we ask you not to smoke during the full healing period.

The stitches are, for the most part, resorbable. We ask you not to play with the stitches or glue (if applicable) with your tongue.

If a surgical glue has been placed, it may fall into white lumps in the coming days.

It's very important not to pull on your lip to look at the surgical site.
